Evelyn Mae Cleveland, 90, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Monday, February 7, 2022, at Heritage Court Memory Care in Eau Claire, Wis.

She was born on October 11, 1931, in Mondovi, Wis. to Clarence and Lulie (Nyre) Johnson. She formerly attended The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd as a Charter Member and First Lutheran Church in Torrance, Calif. before moving to Eau Claire in August 2020. She also attended Central Lutheran Church when she was enjoying her summer home in Mondovi, Wisc. for many years.

Evelyn graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1950. She married James Cleveland on June 10, 1956, at Evanger Lutheran Church in rural Independence, Wis. They began their life together in California, living in Torrance, Calif. for over 60 years and celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary last year. Evelyn retired from Honeywell in 1994 as an executive secretary. She loved singing in the church choir, playing piano and the harmonica. She enjoyed collecting antiques, refinishing furniture, and finding great bargains at garage sales. She loved her family and was so proud of her Norwegian heritage, perfecting her lefse making over the years.

She is survived by daughters Julie (Calvin) Arnould of Osseo, Wis., Wendy (Brian) Smith of Riverside, Calif., son James (Diana) Cleveland of Yorba Linda, Calif.; six grandchildren, Rachel (Jacob) Pidek, Stephanie (Benaiah) Stanley, Logan and Heather Smith, Trent Baskin, Bryce (Faith) Baskin; seven great-grandchildren, Jarred Thompson, Evelyn, Josephine and Gideon Pidek, Freya Stanley, Rev Baskin, Brinlee Baskin; sister-in-law Lenore Johnson of Aurora, Ill., brother-in-law LeRoy Nelson of Colfax, Wis. and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Lorraine (Marcel) DeBel, Doris Nelson, Carrine (Richard) Tomter; two brothers, Herbert and Burton Johnson and granddaughter Jillian Arnould.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 17, 2022 at Edison Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in Evanger Lutheran Cemetery, rural Independence.

A special note of thanks to the staff at Heritage Court Memory Care and to St. Croix Hospice, for taking such wonderful care of Evelyn. She will be greatly missed, but we are comforted in knowing that she is now in the arms of our Lord and loved ones in heaven.
