Irene Hurd Deeley
The Herald Bulletin Aug 6, 2010

Irene Hurd Deeley, 91, passed away Aug. 4, 2010. The family wishes to thank the very kind and caring staff at Bethany Pointe, where she spent her last three months.

Irene was born on Feb. 6, 1919, in Elwood, to Max and Ethel Knotts Hurd.

She was a graduate of Elwood High School and a recipient of a full scholarship to Butler University, which she was unable to accept due to family responsibilities.

Irene was married to her true love, Joseph L. Deeley, also an Elwood High School alumnus, for 62 years.

She was a proud mother of her daughters, Jane Zambreno, Tonka Bay, Minn., and Anne Easterly (Mike), Atlanta, Ga. She enjoyed her grandsons, Mark and Brian Zambreno (Karina) immensely. For the past four years, she was able to spend time with her great-grandchildren, Isabella, Serafina, and Leonardo Zambreno of St. Paul, Minn., and Nathaniel Bamburger of Key Largo, Fla.

Irene was a special person to know. She was high energy and devoted her life as a quiet supporter to those in need. Irene was an avid bridge and Scrabble player, wonderful cook, letter writer, seamstress and volunteer. She was a ferocious reader. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and Mary's circle for 70 years. She was a board member for Church Women United for many years, enjoyed her participation in Lady Elks and YWCA, and earned her 10 year pin as a volunteer for Anderson Community Hospital. She never missed an opportunity to help someone with either food or donations and sent cards to so many friends and relatives throughout her life. She loved to travel and had very memorable trips from the Caribbean to Alaska. She and her late husband, spent many years enjoying Traverse City, Mich., and the St. Pete Beach, Fla., areas. She especially loved cruising in her later years.

Irene never forgot her roots and organized her class reunions until 2007. Her motto could have been – "Always the secretary, never the president." She was a quiet supporter.

She is survived by sisters, Ruby Miller (Drew), Rochester, Minn., Jeanette Reddin (Robert), Anderson, Ind.; and one brother, Max Hurd (Joyce), Phelps, Wisc.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joe; her son-in-law, Bob Zambreno; and her sisters, Helen Hurd, Mildred Harvey, and Carolyn Young.

She is survived by her nieces, Cindy Lawrence, Lora Rich, Randa Hulse, Susan Gourley, Martha Ann Hoaglin, Kathy Strasler, Linda Lewandowski; and nephews, Larry and Mike Reddin, Greg Morehouse, Denny and the late David Harvey, and David and Neal Hurd.

Irene's daughters would like everyone to remember that she would want us to celebrate her life, not mourn. She will be sorely missed.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Matt Manning officiating. Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for St. John's Lutheran Church, 310 E. 53rd St., Anderson, IN 46013 and/or Women's Alternatives. Post online condolences at www.brownbutzdiedring.com.
