Obituary of Palmer Ezra Cornwell (24 January 1945, Clark County (IL) Democrat)

Palmer Ezra Cornwell, son of John and Susan Cornwell, was born January 14, 1874, in Crawford County, Illinois, and departed this life, January 19, 1945, at the age of 71 years and 5 days.

On December 25, 1895, he was united in marriage to Alice Matilda Collier. No children came to bless this marriage, but several orphans found refuge in their home. In November, 1917, an orphan boy, Kenneth Eugene Carpenter was taken into the home and reared as a son. At present, Major Carpenter is stationed with the Army Air Corps in the Panama Canal Zone.

While not affiliated with any church, he was ready and willing to depart this life, praying Jesus to come and receive him. Before leaving, he called his wife and sister-in-law to his bedside and calmly set his temporal affairs in order. During this hour he requested that those who helped care for him be remembered.

Most of his life was spent in the Snyder community. He was a loving husband and devoted father to his adopted son. He was always willing to do a good deed and to help his neighbors in time of need. Although his suffering during the last few months has been intense, he bore it patiently and cheerfully.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his devoted wife, Mrs. Cornwell, his foster son and daughter-in-law, Major and Mrs. Kenneth Carpenter, two brothers, Frank Cornwell of Robinson, Illinois and Orley Cornwell of Chetopa, Kansas, and several nieces and nephews. His other relatives and numerous friends will sadly miss him and his cheery manner.

Funeral services were held at the Prust Funeral Home, West Union, at 2:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon, January 21, Rev. Harod J. Kemp officiating. Burial in Walnut Prarie Cemetery.

Those acting as nephews were the following nephews: Capt. Woodrow Carpenter, Lyle Wait, Bert Collier, Milo Collier, Allen Collier, and Louis Myles.

Flower girls were: Mrs. Clarence Collier, Miss Mary Elizabeth Wait, Miss Alice Collier, Mrs. Leon Garwood, Mrs. Clarence Wilson and Mrs. George Heilene.
