Last Thursday afternoon at 4:00 o;clock, death released Mrs. Catherine Carpenter from months of suffering. When death came by her bedside were her brother, A.C. McCombs, three of her grandsons and Mrs. Vilate Anderson.
Catherine Carpenter was the daughter of the late Andrew McCombs. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah August 3, 1858. A few years later the family moved to Cache valley where they helped in pioneering Clarkston, Logan, Smithfield and Trenton. What education she had, she received at her father's home, which was also used as a school house, dance hall and church house.
She was married to Ezra D. Carpenter in 1885 and had but one child, Mrs Katie Jensen of Grover. In 1889 she moved to Star Valley, living near her brother, A.C. McCombs. Three years later her husband bought a home in Franklin, Idaho and moved Mrs. Carpenter there. Her husband was working for the Z,C.M.I chain stores. He died of a heart attack at the gate of their home in 1893. She then came to Star Valley to live with her parents until the death of her father in 1906 when she and her mother moved back to Logan. After her mothers death she came to live with her daughter who had married Lorenzo Jensen. They have cared for her 32 years. she has been patient in trials and afflictions. due to sickness she became partially blind and was unable to read or do fine handwork. A few years ago she fell and broke her hip but through it all she never complained.
Funeral service was held in the Grover ward chapel Monday at 1:00 Bishop Delos Gardner presiding. The ward choir sang "Come Come Ye Saints." The Opening prayer was offered by C. Elmer McCombs.
Ernest Turner sang "O, My Father"
Bishop Ray S. Thurman spoke of the sterling qualities of the early pioneers and the hardships they endured.
Phyllis Hepworth sang "I hear You Calling Me." Brother George Hepworth spoke of his acquaintance with sister carpenter's father, Andrew McCombs how he joined the church in the east in early days, crossing the plains, and helping to pioneer Cache Valley.
Mondell White sang "Resignation" after which O.P. Peterson spoke of sister Carpenter's cheerfulness and patience during her recent illness and also spoke of her faith in the gospel and of the wonderful care that her daughter and husband Lorenzo and their children had given her.
Bishop Delos Gardner gave a brief sketch of her life and told of the strong testimony she bore to him. The closing song was "Beautiful Zion Built Above," sang by the choir.
The closing prayer was offered by Joseph Anderson. The grave was dedicated by Adolph S. Jensen.
The pall bearers were Harold, Ezzie and Cyril Jensen, Howard Dana, Arvid McCombs, and Gilbert Anderson.
Out of town relatives to attend the funeral were Cyril Jensen, of the U.S. A. C. at Logan and John McCombs of Smithfield.
