Raymond J. Appelhanz, 78, Topeka, died Saturday, March 9, 1996 at his home. He was born Dec. 1, 1917 in Topeka, the son of Jacob and Barbara Hefner Appelhanz.

He was an Army veteran of World War II. He worked for Hill Packing and Ohse Meats many years. He was sexton at Mount Calvary Cemetery eight years. He was a member of the Catholic Church of the Assumption.

He was married to Marguerite Flanagan April 23, 1946 in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Steven Appelhanz, Topeka; a daughter, Madonna Woodrow, Topeka; five brothers, Ralph Appelhanz, Adam Appelhanz, Isadore Appelhanz, Theodore Appelhanz and Leonard Appelhanz, all in Topeka; a sister, Mary Allen, Topeka; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Catholic Church of the Assumption. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Appelhanz will lie in state from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where a parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice Care Inc., 200 Frazier Circle, 66606.
