Elbie, son of John Newton Groves and Abbie Martha McNeil Stewart Groves, was born in Stafford County, Kansas. He married Elizabeth Josephine Murphy, June 12, 1919. They had five children: Doris Aldene, Darlene Gayle, Loraine Elizabeth, Leola Beryl, and Galen Elbie Groves. He farmed in Stafford, and later in Ensign, Kansas. When he moved to Dodge City, Kansas, he was the city Maintenance Superintendent until his retirement. He was an Elder in the Dodge City Church of Christ.
