Helen Dycus Crawford

Helen Dycus Crawford, 84, of Asheville, died Saturday, May 21, 2005, at the Oaks.

A native of Shelby, she was a resident of Buncombe County for most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Jim and Joannie Allen Dycus. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ruel C. Crawford Jr., who died in 2000. She was a co-owner with her husband of Crawford Sign Co. Inc. and was a member of Biltmore Baptist Church.

A wonderful mother and beloved grandmother, she is survived by two daughters, Carol Higdon and her husband, Lou, of Asheville and Jean Epps and her husband, Sammy, of Fletcher; grandchildren, Tracy Owens and her husband, Les, and Heath Herron and his wife, Sherry; great-grandchildren, Ryan Crawford Herron, Sydni Grace and Hayli Faith Owens; sister, Arpie Littlejohn and her husband, Jack, of Newport News, Va.; and brother, Bill Dycus of Asheville.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 24, in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with the Revs. Richard Horn and Herschel Bragg officiating. Her nieces, Raye Dycus Horn and Faye Dycus Bragg, will provide the music accompanied by her nephew, Sonny Dycus. Interment will follow at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian. At other times the family will be at the home of Lou and Carol Higdon, 524 Pinchot Drive, Biltmore Park, in Asheville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the local chapter of the National Alzheimer's Association, 31 College Place, Suite D320, Asheville, NC 28801
