Tony Rufus Ashley, age 80, passed away on Monday, August 30, 2021, surrounded by his loving family.

Tony was born to Rufus C. Ashley and Ezma H. Ashley on November 16, 1940.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of over 45 years, Ione Chambers Ashley; a son, Robbie Ashley; sisters Sammie Echols and Qutene Leonard; and brother Troy Ashley.

Tony loved the Lord and was a member of Porterfield Baptist Church. Tony was retired from the Bibb County Board of Education after a 39-year career. After retirement from the Board of Education, he went to work for Ace Hardware on Houston Road, where his customers loved him. Tony was an excellent athlete and especially loved the game of softball. Not only did he play, he coached ladies' softball for many years, and was also an umpire. His favorite pastime was watching the Atlanta Braves, and he rarely missed a game. Even when his eyesight had deteriorated, he kept the television on the Bally Sports channel so he could still listen to the game. Tony looked forward to eating at Jeneane's at Pinebrook restaurant on Forsyth Road every Friday night. Dawn Fowler always made sure she had his catfish and cheese grits ready and she sure held a very special place in his heart.

Tony is survived by his daughters Sherrie (Allan) Treen; Kim (Pat) Elder; Amanda Ashley; son, Jason Ashley; stepdaughter, Laura (Pat) McLeod; stepsons, Jimmy (Manina) Cofer; Larry (Bambi Yeomans) Cofer; and Mark Cofer; grandchildren, Brittainy (Brad) Horne, Tony (Stephanie) Elder, Lee Purvis, Adam (Logan) Elder, Taylor (Justin) Belk, Heartly Purvis, Tucker Treen, Seth (Noel) Elder, Emily Elder and Callie Grace Mayo; step-grandchildren, Jessica McLeod, Morgan (Jeff) Fike, Sam McLeod, Tia Cofer, Tiffany (Scott) Holmes, Tracy (James) Benefield, James Cofer, Andrew Cofer and Audrey Cofer; 8 great-grandchildren, 20 step-greatgrandchildren; brothers, Jerry (Patricia) Ashley and Hank (Janet) Ashley; and sister, Gail (Johnny) Walker; several nieces and nephews; and dear friends who he loved with all his heart, Horace "Scotty" and Dianne Scott, Richard "Willie" Scott, Robert Dayton, Wade Roundtree and Julie Roundtree.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the amazing nurses at Coliseum Medical Center (3rd and 5th floors), as well as Amedisys Hospice Care. Tony's children also want to send a special and heartfelt thank you to their uncles, Hank Ashley and Jerry Ashley, for always being there for their Daddy. They were the best brothers possible. They lovingly refer to Hank as a "rock," and to Jerry as an "angel."

Due to Covid concerns, there will not be a visitation. Funeral services will be graveside at Macon Memorial Park on Thursday, September 2, 2021 at 10:00 a.m.

The family is honored by all expressions of sympathy but do suggest memorial donations be made to the Salvation Army.
