Edna M. Brautigam, 100, died Aug. 22, 2021, in the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Dunkirk, N.Y.

She was born Feb. 24, 1921, the fifth daughter of John Adam Angerer and Margaret Elizabeth Angerer in Canonsburg, Pa.

She grew up in poverty during the Great Depression and graduated from Cecil High School as salutatorian in 1938. She could not accept a college scholarship because she did not have any additional funds to pay the remaining costs. She attended and completed a degree at Penn Commercial, a business college in Washington, Pa., and then began employment as a secretary, helping to support her parents. She worked at Duncan & Miller, a glass manufacturer in Washington, until she married Frank C. Brautigam on Nov. 16, 1946.

She and Frank moved to North Clymer in the fall of 1948, where they purchased a farm. There they raised a family of five children, all of whom attended Sherman Central School and Houghton College. Shortly after their move to Chautauqua County, Frank and Edna began attending and then became members of the Panama Baptist Church, where Edna was a member for over 70 years.

Edna's life was characterized by her devotion to her family, strong Christian faith, intelligence, capacity for hard work, wit, and frugality. She was extraordinarily healthy: she never missed a day of school (however, she would point out that she skipped a grade, and kindergarten was not offered then, so she only had 11 years of perfect attendance!). She took antibiotics for the first time at age 84, and she lived by herself until age 95. She and Frank attended every church service conducted at the Panama Baptist Church, gave regularly and sacrificially, and made sure their children were with them. They often hosted missionaries and church guest speakers. Edna faithfully and tirelessly labored to ensure her family were well-fed and properly cared for. She was very proud that all five of her children obtained first college and then graduate or professional degrees. She was a faithful fan of "Jeopardy!" and the newspaper daily Jumble. She maintained regular correspondence with her sisters, using her perfect handwriting acquired via the Peterman Penmanship method she learned in school. She knew the birthdays of virtually every friend and acquaintance. She was a loving but firm disciplinarian who expected the best from her children but was careful to avoid unduly complimenting them, so they would not be guilty of self-praise. She often repeated sayings, Biblical snippets, and pithy pieces of instruction, which her brood learned by heart and can still repeat, all of which were intended to correct, instruct, and motivate the wayward, lazy, or inattentive.

She moved in 2016 to the WCA Home in Fredonia, where she lived until earlier this year, when at about the time of her 100th birthday she contracted COVID-19 and ultimately went to CNARC.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frank C. Brautigam, on July 15, 1991; four sisters: Catherine E. Buchanan, Mildred L. Coen, Anna M. Brautigam (the widow of Frank's brother, Elmer), Hazel Angerer (who died in infancy), as well as her parents.

She is survived by one sister, Dorothy M. Hurl, of Clairton, Pa. She is also survived by five children: Dr. Donald (Elaine) F. Brautigam, family physician, Westfield, N.Y., David (Amy) C. Brautigam, Esq., an attorney, Houghton, N.Y., Daryl (Sharon) P. Brautigam, also an attorney, Fredonia, N.Y.. Dr. Dwight (Natalie) D. Brautigam, professor of history, Huntington University, Huntington, Ind., and Faith J. Brautigam, director of the Howard County Library System, Kokomo, Ind. She is further survived by 14 grandchildren: Heidi (Keith) Kaminski, Dr. Jill (Michael) Jordan, Joy (David) Sonju, Laura (Eric) Anderson, Sarah (Joshua) Moore, Susanna (Andrew) Roorbach, Sharon Brautigam, Andrew (Shelley) Brautigam, Hilary (Daniel) Sahli, Joanna Brautigam, Katherine (Ryan) Darr, Bethany Brautigam, Eliza (James) Jones and Frank Rosas. She is also survived by 34 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are being entrusted to the Spitzer Funeral Home, Sherman, N.Y. Visiting hours for friends and family will be held on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. Her funeral will be held at the Panama Baptist Church on Thursday at 11 a.m. Her family requests memorials be made to the Panama Baptist Church or to the Brautigam Family Endowed Scholarship Fund at Houghton College, Houghton, N.Y.
