He moved West to take a Land Grant. He was not in the civil war because of a crooked arm caused when he broke it and didn't have it set because it was on a Sunday and he fell from the hay loft when he should have been in church. He was a farmer, rancher, and operated furniture stores in Oklahoma, Wyoming and Ft. Collins, Colorado. Joseph died in Orange California and is buried at Fairhaven Cemetery.
