Walter was the eldest son of Joseph and Jenny (Jane Rebecca Foss) Kern. He traveled across the prairie in a wagon with his family to Sterling Co. He lived in Colorado, Wyoming and later settled in Anaheim California with his brother Fred Burt Kern where they ran a hardware/sporting goods store.

Walter led many people on hunting/mining trips through the mountains of Southern California. He died of Uranium poisoning and was cremated and ashes sprinkled over the mountains he loved.
