Daughter of Richard Kearns and Mary Beach. Based on records found, it appears Mary preferred to go by Ella after she married, so I will refer to her as Ella.

I first found Ella in the 1880 Census at age 9 living with her parents and siblings in Fairfax County, VA. She is recorded here as "M E Kerns, Dtr, b VA, parents b VA".

Ella married Frank W Heinbuch in 1890 per the 1900 Census which records "Number of Years Married". I did not find a marriage record, but am guessing the wedding occurred in Falls Church, VA or possibly Washington, DC.

Ella had 5 children, of whom only 4 were living as of the 1900 Census. After 1900 she had one more child, a daughter, Linnie.

Ella moved with Frank to Brooklyn, NY between 1900 and 1905, and then to Connecticut between 1905 and 1910.

Ella lost her older daughter, Sadie, in Jan 1917 followed by her husband, Frank in Feb 1918. Ella stayed in Connecticut as of the 1920 Census, but had moved to Thompson, Windham County.

I was surprised to find Ella moved, with all of her children, it appears, to California by 1930. According to her Death Certificate, Ella had lived in California for 6 years, so that would make it 1927 when the family made the big move west.

I wonder what prompted the move. The Great Depression, of course, was in full swing, and perhaps her sons felt they would be better able to find work in California. But Ella died in 1933, so her time in California was brief. She was only 61 years old, but the loss of her husband and daughter likely took a toll on her health. She died of a stroke at her Inglewood home per her Death Certificate.

I ordered Ella's Death Certificate because I wanted to create her memorial and was unsure where she was buried. I had called the 2 Los Angeles cemeteries where I'd found 2 of her children interred, but was told by one she was not at that cemetery and the 2nd cemetery did not call back as they said they would.

When I reviewed Ella's Death Certificate and found she had been "Removed" to Putnam, CT, I was quite surprised. She had obviously made her wishes known to her children that she wanted to be buried with her husband, their father, and her daughter, Sadie.

I am gratified I can recognize Ella thru this memorial almost 90 years after her death.
