Mary Elizabeth Allen Johnson
Our Grandmother
Mary Elizabeth Allen was born in Georgia to Raymond Prescott Allen and Jessie Lee Hinton Allen Gunn on October 24, 1918. Jessie Hinton married Jesse Jones Gunn around 1905 and had two children William L and Lila Ruth. Jessie divorced Jesse around 1913 and married Raymond Allen. They had two children Raymond Anderson Allen and Mary Elizabeth (my grandmother). Jessie then divorced Raymond and remarried Jesse Gunn around 1921 and had Howard, Wilson, Helen, Garland and Marion Gunn. Jesse Gunn left Jessie sometime in late 1929 after the death of their infant child Marion and left Jessie to raise 6 children alone. Mary lived a hard life as many did during the depression. In 1935 her mother died of tuberculosis in Decatur Alabama. William L (her oldest brother) and his wife Willie raised Mary and her siblings when Jessie died.
Mary married Eugene Johnson sometime around 1935. They only stayed together a few months. She had a child Leroy Johnson 23 January 1938 - 13 April 1941, whom she gave up for adoption to her oldest brother William L Gunn. Leroy died at age 3 when he drank Lysol in Marshall County, Alabama.
Mary had my mother on April 8, 1946 and gave her up for adoption to her oldest sister Lila Ruth Gunn Cloud when my mother was months old. Mary then "vanished". She later moved to California for reasons unknown and died in March of 1987 of natural causes.
My three sisters and I have been searching for her for many years so my mother may have closure. We found her on July 6, 2009 unfortunately in this cemetery. We were told she died alone in a nursing home with no family. She may have died alone but she will always be in our hearts. We had her cremated remains removed from the niche it was in and our family now has her with us. We will place her with her daughter when her time has come to meet God and they will be together in death. We love you Grandma!
When the 1940 Census was released we found Mary in Bryce Mental Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. We found out she had been in Camarillo State Mental hospital in Ventura County, California after attempting sucide. Her brother Raymond had her placed there. She was sent to Alabama and waited in the Madison County, Alabama Jail for a bed to become avalible in Bryce. She was transferred in June 1939 to Bryce. We are trying to obtain her mediacal records but HIPAA Laws prevents us from getting them at this time.
June 2019 a DNA from ancestry.com has given us a few leads. Possible father last name of my mother is Caserta or Casella. Search is underway!!!
