He enlisted in 1898 in the "Phoenix City Rifles of Auburn, Alabama, and went with the company to Mobile, Alabama, where they reported for duty at Camp Johnston on May 6th, 1898. The "Rifles" were mustered into service as Company L of the 2nd Alabama Infantry Regiment, United States Volunteers, at Camp Johnston in May of 1898.
He served with the regiment as part of the 4th Army Corps, and later the 7th Army Corps, at camps in Miami and Jacksonville, Florida, until September of 1898. In September the regiment was sent to Montgomery, Alabama, to prepare to be mustered out of United States service, the men being given a thirty-day furlough on September 20th. In October of 1898 the regiment re-assembled in Birmingham, Alabama, and on October 31st, 1898, were mustered out of service.
