CLEARFIELD-Afton Celia Higley, 86, passed away Tuesday, November 20, 2007 peacefully at home. She was born June 15, 1921, in Naf, Idaho, the daughter of John and Annie Johnson Lythgoe. She graduated from Granite High School and from the University of Utah with a degree in social services.





Afton married Edwin Mayne Higley on February 8, 1941 in the Salt Lake Temple. He passed away on June 19, 2002. She was a member of the LDS Church and served as primary teacher, visiting teacher, and both ward and stake Relief Society President. Together with her husband she served as a ward missionary and an 18-month mission to Cancito, NM. Afton worked in her father's chain of grocery stores, and was an excellent seamstress and homemaker. She loved to make good meals for her family, especially desserts and loved making bread. Mom and Dad loved to help needy families, always ready to cook a dinner for those in need. She was well loved by our family and by many others as well.



Surviving are her four sons: E. Gregory Higley, Kaysville, Mark L. (Kris) Higley, Kaysville, John L. (Cindy) Higley, Preston, ID, Matthew L. (Cecilia) Higley, West Point; two daughters, Celia Higley, Lake Tahoe, NV, Mala (Mark) Kappos, Uintah; one foster daughter, Arlene Watchman-Charley, Kaysville, 30 grandchildren, and 43 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters: Veda Gillespie, Kay Markle and GayAnne Hardenburg Preceded in death by her husband, one brother, Wendell Lythgoe, and sisters Fern Barrett and Neva Heil.




Funeral Services will be held Monday, November 26, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends and family may call Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services at the mortuary.
Interment: Clearfield City Cemetery.
