He played Major League baseball as a First Baseman for eight seasons (1883 to 1890) with the Philadelphia Quakers/Phillies of the National League, and the Philadelphia Athletics of the Players League. He was a members of the very first Phillies team in 1883 (then called the Quakers until the name was changed a year later), and saw his time go a dismal 17 wins and 81 losses that year. He would be a starter in all eight years of his career, and topped with a .344 batting average in 1887. His last year was spent with Athletics of the short-lived Players League, and when that league folded he retired. His daughter, Geraldine Farrar, would go on to became an internationally famous opera singer and actress.
