Jim grew up on a farm, but moved to Hammond, IN after leaving the Army. He worked at American Maize (Amaizo) in Hammond, where he worked until retirement. He met Dorothy June Bridegroom and they married on 08/29/1959 in Hammond, IN. They had 4 children, 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild (as of Aug 2021). In 2020 their great grandchild, Michael Patrick Maklenburg Jr. passed from complications of Muscular Dystrophy at the age of 15. Dorothy passed at the age of 38 shortly after their first grandchild was born. Jim remarried, but did not have any additional biological children, although he became very fond of many of his step-children.
In addition to growing up in Oblong, IL, and raising children in Hammond, IN, Jim also lived in Wahoo, NB, Boswell, IN and Fowler, IN during the years after his retirement. He loved dogs, fishing, gardening and watching old westerns. He planted extra tomatoes and other vegetables every year so he could give them to others. Jim was mechanically inclined and could often be found with his hands in grease from a car or a lawn mower. He would not have described himself as artistic, but he was. In his earlier years he made rings from stainless steel bolts. In his later years he took up wood whittling and wood working. He made wonderful wood pieces that he gave to family and friends. If he did not have his hands in dirt or grease, you might find him changing the webbing on a lawn chair, fixing a vacuum cleaner or something similar.
Jim passed away at his home in Fowler, IN on 07/08/2007. He was a good guy and is very much missed by family and friends.
