William J. BALDWIN, 91, West Trails End Road, died at 10 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Hospital, South Bend.
Born in Fountain, Mich. to William L. and Emma WALTERS BALDWIN, he married Lois A. HEETER Dec. 24, 1937 in South Bend. She survives.
Mr. Baldwin came to Rochester from South Bend in 1974. He moved to South Bend from Fort Wayne in 1950. He also lived in Dade City, Fla. He retired in 1974 from the engineering department of Indiana & Michigan Electric Co., South Bend, after 37 years. He was a 50-year member of River Park United Methodist Church, South Bend, a member of Rochester Masonic Lodge 79, Free and Accepted Masons, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, Wally Byum AirStream Club International for 30 years, a board member of Fulton County Historical Society and of IMECO of I & M Credit Union. He was involved in the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. He and his wife were avid travelers. He helped build churches in Tennessee and Kentucky, researched and wrote the Baldwin family genealogy and co-wrote a cookbook "Grandma's Berry Patch," with proceeds being donated to the Fulton County Historical Society.
Surviving with his wife, at home, are two daughters, Wilma MELCHIORRE and husband Richard, Highlands Ranch, Colo., Roxanna SMITH and husband Steven, South Bend; one son, William D. [BALDWIN] and wife Carolyn, South Bend; eight grandchildren, Dr. Erik MELCHIORRE, Greencastle, Dina WOFFORD, Denver, Colo., William Robert BALDWIN, Rochester, Bradley David BALDWIN, South Bend, Brooke Suzanne BALDWIN, San Diego, Calif., Aaron and Molly SMITH, Indianapolis, and Sarah SMITH, Chicago; one sister, Bernice HENDERSON, Rochester; several nieces and nephews.
Preceding in death were one brother, George [BALDWIN], and five sisters, Mildred BALDWIN, Ethel WILLIAMS, Bessie VOORHEES and twin infant sisters.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, with Rev. Phil ABRAHM of River Park United Methodist Church officiating. Graveside services and burial will be at noon Saturday at Leiters Ford IOOF Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday at Palmer Funeral Home, South Bend, where a Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to River Park United Methodist Church, 920 South 23rd St., South Bend, IN 46615, or Fulton County Historical Society, 37 E.
