He graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus. After graduation, Ervin went to work for his older brother Orlo in Logan, Iowa. This is where he learned the printing business. Upon returning to Columbus, Ervin worked for Otto Walters at the Art Printery. On April 18, 1936, Ervin married Lillian Loseke in Leigh, Nebraska. He worked for a time at the Columbus Telegram before moving to the family farm north of Columbus where he farmed for a number of years.
While farming, Ervin worked part time at the Leigh World Paper and the Norfolk Daily News. He moved the family back to Columbus in 1958, and once again went to work at the Columbus Telegram. He was a Production Supervisor for the Telegram and retired in 1977 after working in the printing business for 29 years.
Ervin was a past member of Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh, Nebraska. While a member of Zion, Ervin was active in the Lutheran Laymen's League. Ervin was one of 30 charter members of Peace Lutheran Church. He had served on the church's building fund committee, was an elder, usher, and a member of the Lutheran Laymen's League. He enjoyed bowling and dancing.
