The Villages, Fla. - Remona Joan Gustafson, 79, returned to her Heavenly Father following a brief struggle with cancer on Sept. 24, 2017; surrounded by her family at home in The Villages.
Joan was born May 2, 1938, in Fulton County, Illinois, to Luther Bernard Zimmerman and Blanche Mae (White) Zimmerman.
She was a graduate of Avon High School (Avon, Illinois).
She married David L. Gustafson on Oct. 30, 1954, at the Methodist Church in Abingdon, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Jane (White) Zimmerman, and Blanche (White) and Russell Utsinger; one sister, Marguerite (Zimmerman) Applebee; and one brother, Private First-Class Bernard Zimmerman (killed in action in Korea).
Joan is survived by her husband, David Gustafson; three children, Russell (Luan) Gustafson, Lorraine Gustafson, and Bradley (Kathy) Gustafson; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, five sisters; and three brothers.
In 1971, Joan and David opened Knox Office Equipment (which later became Medical Software Specialists) in Galesburg, Illinois, where she served as vice president. After nearly 30 years of successful business, Joan and David retired in 2000 and relocated to The Villages in 2003.
Joan was an active member of the American Legion, Jay-C-ettes, Eastern Star, Altrusa, Young Business Women's Association, Oak Run Board of Directors, First Lutheran Church (Galesburg, Illinois), and Hope Lutheran Church (The Villages, Florida).
Following her cremation, a small, private family service will be held in her honor.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in her name to your local hospice organization, the Humane Society, ASPCA, or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
