The family moved to Missouri and bought a farm in the Smoky Row school district in Bates Co. where Ruthven passed away. His wife, Elizabeth lived with her sister, Addie Drake, in Creighton, then moved to Kansas City, where she died of breast cancer in the early 1900s. She was brought back to be buried beside Ruthven in Cove Creek Cemetery.
