Mary Alice (Shepherd) Belcher was the daughter of James Harvey Shepherd (1850-1922) and Nancy C. Griffith (1850- ?). Both were born in Russell Co., Virginia.

In 1877 Alice married Ulysses Grant "Asa" Belcher in Russell Co., VA. About 1916 Alice and Asa moved their family to Boyle Co., Kentucky. When Asa died in 1930 (train-auto accident) at the age of 60 they had been married for 43 years and had had 19 known children.

Alice died in 1958 at the age of 87. She and her husband are buried in the Wilson Cemetery in Boyle Co., KY. as are several of their children.
