Born on his mother's 31st birthday, Odie was the only one of her three children to be born in a hospital. He was named "Walter" for his grandfather, Walter Raleigh Pike and "Clifton" for his uncle, Harry Clifton Kello.
On August 3, 1944, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps Reserves for the duration of World War II and was stationed in Boca Raton, Florida. Upon returning home, he began his career with Virginia Electric and Power Company (now Dominion Energy) where he remained until his retirement.
In 1953, at the age of 27, he married Betty Sue Elliott of Marion, Virginia. They were married for 66 years and had two sons, Thomas Alan Kello (who blessed them with a grandson, Andrew Kello) and William Clarke Kello (who blessed them with a granddaughter, Kelley Kello Williams, and two great-granddaughters, Adalyn and Billie Williams).
Odie passed away on December 27, 2019 at the age of 93.
