Abner's wife was Christine Eveline (Herring) Cross. Abner & Christine was the parent's of 11 children.

Born in Georgia in 1838, moved to Alabama shortly thereafter the death of his grandfather in 1841. The real reason for the move is unknown, but the time frame was the start of the railroad in Atlanta and the removal of the Cherokee Indians (Trail of Tears). He spent time in Alabama and some where between 1848-1850 was found in Choctaw County, MS in 1850. He was a Private with Company K 24th Mississippi Regiment Infantry, in the war between the states. Wounded severely in the battle of Resaca, near Dalton Georgia May 14th & 15, 1864, serving under General E.C. Walthall.

The roster of the Civil War Service Members states he was a member of Company E.
