At age 18 she moved to Los Angeles, California and went to work for United Airlines.
At age 28 she married Jerome (Jerry) Burton and together they had four children.
While her children were young she stayed home to raise them, sold Avon, and was active in the PTA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and was a scorekeeper for Little League and Girls Softball.
She later went to work for Security Pacific Bank (which became Bank of America) and Freeman Products, where she worked until she died at age 64.
