He graduated from North Side High School in 1954 and joined the US Air Force Reserve and served for eight years, with one year in Chambly France during the Berlin crisis. He was employed by Associated Tires (Goodyear) for 12 years. In 1965 he purchased the Leo Shell Station in Leo, Ind. He belonged to the Leo Chamber and served on the Leo Business Men Association. In 1972 he started Caywood Garage Door Sales & Service. He closed business in 1991 and went to work at the Allen County Sheriff's Department. In 1993 he was appointed Superintendent of the Steuben County Park in Angola, Ind. He then went to work for different apartment communities and retired after 9 years at Wesley Park Apartments in Auburn, Ind. He had been very active in Boys Scouts and enjoyed wood carving, fishing, travel and NASCAR, but his biggest joy was being with his family and friends.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Phyllis (Sampson) Caywood; mother, Hilda Caywood; daughter, Angela (Joel) Bjorge of Leo/Cedarville; sons, Donald II (Cindy) of Auburn, Scott (Sheila) of Fort Wayne and Timothy (Cathy) of Woodburn; and grandchildren, Daniel (Jeena) Caywood, Kara (Justin) Fralick, Pamela Caywood (fiancee Patrick Easterday), Caroline Caywood, Sharon Caywood, Kim (Joey) Dunham, Robbie Caywood (finacee Amanda Berz) and Paul Caywood; stepgrandchildren, Tiffany Dunham, Zach Dunham, Dallas Hawkins, Cody VanAlstine, Cathy VanAlstine and Breanna Ward; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Dale (Linda) of Wolcottville and Michael (Nancy) of Huntertown; sister, Diana (David) Frey of Wilmer, Minn.; and close family friend, Roger Collins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Emanuel Caywood; brothers, James and Wendell Caywood; and granddaughter, Ashley Caywood.
Service is 12 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013 at Church of Good Shepherd, 14717 Amstutz Road, Leo, Ind. with calling one hour prior. Calling also from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2013 at the church. Burial in Leo Cemetery. Memorials to donor's choice. Arrangements by Hockemeyer Funeral Home, Harlan Chapel.
