Obituary

Joseph Adamson

Funeral services for Joseph Adamson were held in the home of his son, Frank Adams, and in the Boxholm Methodist church Sunday afternoon. The interment was made on the family lot in the Pilot Mound cemetery.

Joseph Adamson was born in the Swede Bend community, southwest of Stratford, April 27, 1857. He died in the county hospital in Boone on May 10, 1940, at the age of 83 years, 13 days.

He was one of a family of 21 children who as a babe and with his mother were hidden in a cave to escape from Indians. When his mother died when he was still a small child, he was given to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Johnson, of Pilot Mound township, where he spent his boyhood. As a young man he went west, first to the lumber camps of northern Minnesota, then to western Kansas and later to the west coast where he worked in California and Oregon. At one time he joined Buffalo Bill's ranch at Cody, Wyo.

He lacked an education but was termed a "self-made" man in his later years for he was quite a writer of poetry and articles for newspapers, always writing under an assumed name. He was a good violin player, could entertain with a rousing speech and was versed in almost every general subject.

In 1883 he married Augusta Holst and five children were born of the union. Three have passed on and there remains the son, Frank, and a daughter, Mrs. Leonard Carlson, seven grand children, and 2 great grandchildren; one brother, Charley Adamson, of Pilot Mound, and a sister, Mrs. Carrie Mathews, of near Boone, two half brothers and two half sisters.

After farming for more than thirty years in Boone county he moved to Pilot Mound and a few years ago moved into the home of his son.
