Sylvia Clare Marie (Brose) Horstmann, age 92 of Winsted, MN, passed away January 11, 2021.

She was born on July 14, 1928 in Perham, MN to Adelbert and Isabelle (Fasching) Brose. She grew up in Winsted, MN and attended Holy Trinity High School. After graduation from Holy Trinity High, she worked full time at Winsted Journal office until she got married and started a family.

On June 13, 1950, she was joined in marriage to Cletus Horstmann at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted, MN. Together they lovingly raised seven children.

After Cletus passed away in 1974, Sylvia attended school at Ridgewater Community College to get certified as a secretarial and administrative assistant. She worked for the Glencoe and Buffalo court houses. She loved to spend time tending her gardens, watching the birds and sunsets, and being outdoors in nature. Sylvia was an excellent cook and baker; she loved providing homecooked meals and treats for her family. Sylvia enjoyed listening to German and Polka music, dancing, and watching musicals and plays.

Sylvia had a generous and loving heart, easy-going personality, and outgoing spirit. She took pride in raising her family; her children meant the world to her. Sylvia cherished her friendships and enjoyed long conversations and visits with them. She also enjoyed driving in the country looking at the fields with how the crops were doing.

When she was 50 years old, she was in a tragic car accident that resulted in paralysis from a spinal cord injury. Instead of giving up, she relied on her faith to give her strength and courage to adapt to her new life. She learned to drive and be independent, never complained, and continued to volunteer with church activities at Holy Trinity. She helped print the church bulletin, and was a member of the church choir for many years.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Cletus; son, Brian; parents, Adelbert and Isabelle; siblings, Steven Brose, Michael Brose, Charmaine Hartman, and Elmerine Nowak.

Survived by her children, Loren, Alan, Gregory (Mary), Kevin (Renee), Jan (Glenn) Ramthun, and Karen; grandchildren, Michael Ramthun, Alex Horstmann, and Elizabeth Horstmann; great-grandchildren, Tate and Cooper Ramthun, and Luca Horstmann Lopez; brother, Ralph (Joan) Brose; and many relatives and friends.

A private family interment will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery, with a Memorial Mass at church at a later date for the public. The family would like to thank the Gardens of Winsted, formerly St. Mary’s, for the wonderful care and activities provided for Sylvia.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted.
