Doug lived his entire life in Salt Lake City. He graduated from South High School and immediately enlisted in the Navy. He served our country with honor and great pride in WWII. On his return from active duty, Doug married Jerry Loveall and together they raised three children. They were later divorced. Doug married Ruth Manwill Schmidt on October 16th, 1975 (later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple). Doug loved and cared for Ruth for almost 38 years (until her passing from cancer in 2013) and he's now enjoying their sweet reunion. Ruth expanded Doug's family with the addition of Ruth's six children. Ruth's children truly became Doug's children.
Doug was a hard worker and had many talents, perhaps none greater than his excellence in photography. He was awarded the prestigious "Master Photographer" certification and blessed the lives of thousands of people with his artistry. For many years, he was the official photographer for the Utah Opera Company, as well as the Utah State Senate. Doug and Ruth co-operated Vista Tours and over the years took many large groups on tours of Mexico. Doug was an active member of the LDS Church and had a great testimony of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ which he shared often and in depth. Doug and Ruth also served as companions on an inner city LDS service mission.
Doug is survived by his children, Robert McEwan, Mark and Pam McEwan, Barbara and Brent Undjhem, Roxanne and Ivan Udy, Hollie and Terry Orton, Laurie and Mike Roberts, Julie and Mayo Hogue, Teri and Brad Kramer, and Greg and Michele Schmidt. 38 grandchildren, 91 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. He was the 13th of 14 children and is survived by his younger brother, Harold "Hal" McEwan (Arlene)…who was not just his only remaining sibling, but was his dearest friend and was sitting by his side when Doug passed away.
A special thanks to the loving staff at Spring Gardens Assisted Living and Bristol Hospice Utah who eased Doug's last days.
