Obituary from the Stanwood News (written by Betty, his wife)

WALTER B. CASJENS
Walter "Bert" Casjens quietly passed away Oct. 12, 2004 in Stanwood. He was born in Haiti, SD 84 years ago, Feb. 12, 1920. He was the youngest of four boys and six girls. Parents were Ira and Hattie Casjens. He still has two older sisters, Zee, 94 years old, and Ruby, 86 years old. Both live in Long Beach, CA.

Bert lived in Long Beach for over 29 years and met his wife, Betty Jean Newell. They were married Dec. 20, 1950. They had almost 54 years of happy marriage. They had two children, daughter Patricia A. Casjens-Peters (husband Perry) of Beaverton, OR, and son, Timothy E. Casjens of Lakewood, CA.

Bert served four years in the Army in W.W.II. He drove City Bus in Long Beach for a time. He then went to work for ARCO oil company for 26 years. In February 1979, Bert and Betty had a home built on Camano Island and lived there ever since. He enjoyed gardening and the woods around the home and spending time with the one and only pet dog, "Monday." He also took classes with the seniors in oil painting and wood carving over the years. He was real good at carving animals. He kept a lot of trails open with his Ford tractor in the woods. Bert also loved camping with "Good Sams" over the years. Bert was a resident at Josephine Sunset Home for exactly four years, with diabetes and Alzheimer's. His wife Betty visited with him almost every day. At his request, no services will be held. Those wanting to remember Bert, donations can be given in his name to the Stanwood Food Bank building fund. "Are ya warm? Love ya — kiss — see you later," Betty.
*************************************************
Son kept ashes and it is believed that he spread the ashes at the home property in Camano Island, Washington. Walter Casjens had indicated that he wanted to be buried at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon along with his wife, Betty Jean (nee Newell) Casjens. She had told me that she wanted that also; the two of them together. In respect to Walter's wishes, he was memorialized at the cemetery along with one-half of the ashes of Betty on 24 Oct 2022.
