Anton came to the United States in November 1857 with two of his sisters (Maria, and Margaret). He married Anna Maria Strohicker on March 25, 1860. Their children were Anton Spath Jr, Anna Marie Spath Anthon, Matilda Spath, Christina Spath Johnson and Edward M. Spath.

Anna Maria died January 21, 1890 and is buried in Baltimore Cemetery.

After Anna Maria's death, Anton married Magdalina Rumohr. She died in November 1900.

Anton married Augusta Philips on January 3, 1901 in Towson, Maryland.

Writers for the Baltimore Sun called Anton the patriarch of the village of Cross Key. He was a farmer and gradually acquired considerable property in the village.
