Edward was the youngest son of Anton and Anna Maria Spath. He married Laura Anthon on April 24, 1893. Their children were Madeline and Edward.

Edward and his family were active members of the Hampden Baptist Church. George Yeagle and Edward Spath operated a grocery store on Falls Road near Cold Spring Lane in Baltimore. Edward died as he was walking to work at the store. He was 52 years old.
