George was the son of Robert Wendt, a German immigrant and Hannah Wick. His father died when he was one year old. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Spencer Osborn. He grew up in Bemidji, MN and worked in a lumber mill and also as a carpenter.

On June 30, 1943 he married Isabel Zimmerman. They had an orchestra which played at barn dances and clubs in MN. He played the accordion and she the guitar. They had five children before moving to Pasco WA, where George worked with his brother in an auto salvage yard. Another son was born to them in Pasco.

In 1963, George purchased Moscow Auto Wrecking in Moscow ID, which he operated from 1963 until his death at the age of 60.
