Family of John Bolander Stoner (1830-1879) and Evaline Day (1829-1909)
John Bolander Stoner was my great-grandfather and the second son of Casper and Sariah Yates Stoner. He was just ten years old when the family moved to Indiana, and 25 when he married Evaline Day (1829-1909) on September 6, 1865. The young couple moved in with John’s widowed father, and by the time of the 1870 US Census had three children – Johnathon (age 3), Artemis (age 1) and Josiah (age 3 months). Artemis had a twin sister who had died at birth.
Evaline Day was daughter of Edward Poe Day (1788-1873), sister of Josiah W. Day (1828-1888) who had married John’s older sister Elizabeth Stoner, and first cousin of John Wesley Day (b 1826), who had married John’s younger sister Susan Stoner. The progeny of these three married couples eventually formed an annual Stoner-Day reunion that met until sometime after about 1980. I attended this reunion with my parents regularly until I graduated from high school in 1955.
A 16-and-½-page genealogy of the descendants of John B. and Evaline Stoner entitled “The John Stoner Family History” was compiled and distributed at the Stoner-Day Reunion in the summer of 1976 by Mrs. Anna Stoner Martin. It includes names, birthdates, and the 1976 addresses of most of the descendants living at the time.
John B. and Evaline Stoner had the following eight children: Johnathon Wesley (1856-1946), Artemecy (AKA Artemis or Artie, 1858- 1942), unnamed twin of Artemecy (b1858, died at birth), Josiah Washington (1860-1931), Nathaniel (1862-1891), Sarah Elizabeth (1864-1930), Edward Newton (1867-1936) and Daniel Calvin (1869-1938). The 1880 US Census lists Evaline as the head of the household with six children – Johnathon, the oldest, is by that time working on his uncle Daniel’s farm. By 1900 all of the children are married except Artie – she and her mother Evaline were living in a house at 2170 Langley Street in Indianapolis.
