Max Buchanan Hansen served in the U.S. Army during World War II. While fighting in Europe he was awarded the Silver Star and the Purle Heart. The following was typed from a telegram sent to his parents:

"By direction of the President and under provisions of Army Regulations the Silver star is awarded to Sgt. Max B. Hansen, Cavalry U.S. Army. For gallantry in action in France on 29 July 1944. While he was assisting his platoon leader to remove time bomb from a bridge, the bombs detonated, severely injuring the platoon leader. Despite heavy enemy fire, he applied first aid to his platoon leader, and carried him to safety."

Was awarded the Purple Heart. Award reads in part as follows:

"The Purple Heart is awarded to Sgt. Max B. Hansen, Cavalry U.S. Army. For wounds received in France on 27 July 1944."

The awards were dated 15 August 1944 and 17 September 1944.
