While he was assisting his platoon leader to remove time bomb from a bridge, the bombs detonated, severely injuring the platoon leader. Despite heavy enemy fire, he applied first aid to his platoon leader, and carried him to safety."
Was awarded the Purple Heart. Award reads in part as follows:
"The Purple Heart is awarded to Sgt. Max B. Hansen, Cavalry U.S. Army. For wounds received in France on 27 July 1944."
The awards were dated 15 August 1944 and 17 September 1944.
