John E. May was born in Augusta County, Virginia, Sept. 10, 1850 in a log cabin. He departed this life on June 20, 1926 at the age of 75 years, 9 months, and 10 days. His father's name was Fountain May and his mother's name Virginia May. To this union seven children were born: Jake, John, Bill, Sis, Gus, Jim and Neal. His parents moved to Illinois and after two years came to Missouri in 1850. His father enlisted in the Civil War in 1861, served three years and then re-enlisted. He was taken prisoner in about six months and afterwards died, mostly from starvation. John and his brother Jake, worked in a brick yard for 25 cents a day, turning brick, to support the family. This was the reason he failed to get an education. His mother died July 10, 1900.

He was united in married to Olive Wilhite, Oct 3, 1878. To this union nine children were born: Lola Williams, Lester May, Hattie Johnson, Homer May, Jim May, Alda Clark, Etha Moberly, Austin and Orva May. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, nine children, 22 grand children, seven great grandchildren, two brothers, Jim and Will, two sisters, Neal and Sis, besides many friends.

Uncle John had been a patient sufferer for many years and before closing his eyes in silent slumber expressed a desire and willingness to go home and be at rest. The family extends thanks to all who so kindly helped administer during his last illness. (Milan Republican, 1 Jul 1926)
