Fountain Shelton May was born in Rockingham County, Virginia to Jacob and Elizabeth (Raynes) May. His grandfather, Lawrence Raynes was a Patriot soldier in the Revolutionary War. He was married to Virginia Young in 1848. They moved to Missouri (via Illinois) around 1858. In 1862 Fountain May enlisted as a private in Co. A, 23rd Regiment of Missouri Volunteers (infantry). In his first battle at Shiloh (Tennessee), he was taken prisoner, moved to Macon, Georgia and died at Camp Oglethorpe. He was probably buried there, but may have been moved to Andersonville National Cemetery (many soldiers were moved, but there is no record). The soldiers of the 23rd held the Confederates at bay at Shiloh for several hours, allowing the Union Army to escape.
