"My life while growing up on the farm in Georgia was kind of two fold, sometimes consisting of hardtimes and other times filled with pleasure. On our farm, we planted, cultivated and harvested mostly cotton and corn. The raising of cotton in those days required plenty of hard work. Planting, plowing and picking cotton seemed to never end. We as a family co-operated and worked hard which was expected of all farmers to gain the badge of admiration from all of the other farmers. It didn't seem to matter how big or small the harvest, but how hard you worked. Many times the renumeration was small.
My brothers and I enjoyed exploring the woodlands near home with out two little dogs. I hunted quails with my brothers with well trained dogs that my older brother, Baxter, trained. We fished off of the banks of the Connasauga River with a cane, line, hook and worms. We also fished with fish baskets and what was known as trot lines. All of these types of fishing were interesting, but the fishing I enjoyed most as a boy was what we called seining with the sein. We would get a surprise catch almost every time we raised the sein. We would catch all kinds and sizes of fish, turtles, snakes and many other kinds of creatures. The Connasauga River also contained our swimming hole.........."
As with most farmers in the Resaca area, McRaue and his brothers and sisters began working in the fields at a very early age, because the children were needed to make the farming successful.
