John Bender Bean is the eleventh born child, born in Jackson County, Tennessee. When a fire destroyed the family home in 1848, the family relocated to the top of the Cumberland Plateau in Jackson County, living on a point of the mountain that separates Tate's Cove and Devers' Cove in Big Coon Valley. At the beginning of the Civil War, he and six of his brothers joined the cause in Aug 6, 1861, joining Company G of the 34th Tennessee Infantry. All seven of the brothers survived the war and returned home,. His exact grave location is unknow but expected that since other researchers have verbal knowledge that some of his brothers are at the McCrary Grider cemetery, it is logical he is in one of the many graves marked only with a field rock. John lived near his brother Crawford "Dutch" Bean in Little Coon Valley, just up the valley from this cemetery. He married Mary Roberts on April 24, 1881 and then on March 17, 1895 he married Jane Jacks, who is listed as Mrs. Jane Gifford (widow to a Gifford) at Sunset, which is the head of Tate's Cove in Big Coon Valley. John's will, recorded in will book 4-5 page 108 says he died at his home at Olalee, which is the post office for Little Coon Valley.
