William "Bill" Barry

Zanesville - William "Bill" S. Barry, 88 of Zanesville, died 10:32 PM, Thursday, November 22, 2018, at Helen Purcell Senior Living.

He was born Saturday, February 22, 1930, in Zanesville, the son of William G. Barry and Mildred I. (Stokely) Barry.

He married Janet (Jacobs) Barry on June 13, 1953, and was a faithful member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.

Bill served his country as a veteran of the United States Army.

He was President and CEO of the Bloomer Candy Company, being the third generation of his family to guide its success. Bill's dedication to the company, his employees and customers, hard work and tenacity for business allowed the company to grow and prosper under his leadership.

Bill used his business knowledge and personal dedication for community service to serve on many boards throughout the years. He was Chairman of The Good Samaritan Hospital Board of Trustees, President of Bishop Rosecrans High School Board of Trustees, St. Thomas Parish Council President, and was a member of the Diocese of Columbus Foundation and the National Confectioners Association.

Bill was honored with the following awards for outstanding community service. The Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Award "for the Church and the Pope" presented by Pope John Paul II, Diocese of Columbus Bronze Pelican Award, Franciscan Sisters of Charity Man of the Year Award, the National Confectioners Association Candy Hall of Fame inductee, the Bob & Delores Hope Award, Bishop Rosecrans High School Service Award and Sertoma Service to Mankind Award.

But most of all, Bill was a committed family man. He was a loving, caring and dedicated husband, father and grandfather who greatly enjoyed the time he spent with his family.

Bill is survived by his wife of over 65 years: Janet Barry; five children: Teresa (John) Kinkead, Patrick W. (Joan) Barry, Thomas V. (April Smith) Barry, Robert G. Barry and Ann (Phillip) Kane; sixteen grandchildren: Kathryn Young, Jaye (Megan) Kinkead, Hillary (Jordan) Hatch, Briana Kinkead, Cyrus Kinkead, Angela Kinkead, John (Mary) Barry, Joshua (Jessica) Barry, Justin (Meghan) Barry, Christopher Barry, Danielle Barry and her fiancée Kolby Knox, Emma Barry, Nicholas Barry, Caroline Kane, Charlotte Kane and Will Kane; nine great grandchildren: Lily Hatch, Robert Hatch, Marius Hatch, Hazel Hatch, Iris Barry, Conlin Barry, Kensington Barry, Sawyer Barry and Daphne Wisecarver.

The family would like to thank Doretta Donnelly for the assistance and special care she gave to Bill during his illness.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by three sisters.

Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Monday, November 26, 2018, at the Hillis, Combs & Nestor Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue, Zanesville, where a Christian Vigil will be held at 6:45 PM. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 AM, Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 144 North Fifth Street, Zanesville, with Fr. J.C. Sullivan as celebrant.

Bill will be laid to rest in Mt. Olive Cemetery with VFW Post 1058 and the American Legion Post 29 conducting full military honors.
