BOONES CHAPEL CEMETERY

On March 14, 1872. Thomas Boon deeded "two or more acres" of land to James Lyon and D. Sullivan, trustees of a Church then existing on the land, which he gave as: "a place of divine worship for the use of ministers and membership of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South." Boone died soon after and is buried in the center of what has now become a large cemetery – being the community burying ground.

Thomas "Tom" Daniel Boon was the son of Nathan and Frances Ann Boon of the Keowee River area, Pickens County, South Carolina. Thomas married Margaret "Peggy" Clark Craig, daughter of John Nean Craig and Catherine Wilson of Keowee Lake Home, Pickens District, South Carolina.

In 1837, the Thomas Boon Family migrated from Pickens District, South Carolina to Pickens County, Alabama; verified by census and land records. In 1850, Thomas Boon owned thirteen slaves and 120 acres of land in Pickens County, Alabama. In the late 1850s the Thomas Boon Family, (including sons, Thomas A, Robert Newton, and Belton J.) migrated to Okalona, Chickasaw County, Mississippi where his three oldest sons, (William Clarke, Joseph H., and J. M.) were already residing.

In the 1860, Thomas Boon owned seventeen slaves. Thomas Boon's sons; Joseph H., Thomas A., Robert Newton and Belton J. had all served as confederate soldiers during the Civil War. Pvt Belton J Boon, Private Robert Newton Boon and Corporal Thomas A Boon of Co. B, All serving with the Sixth Regiment, Mississippi Calvary were paroled May 12, 1865 in Gainesville, Alabama after surrendering on May 4th, 1865. J. H. Boon was killed at the "Battle of Vicksburg" in 1863. Son - In - Laws, Lawrence DeCody Bailey and Andrew John Slaughter served in the 42 Alabama Infantry Regiment during the Civil War.


Tom and Peggy had the following nine children:

(2) J H BOON, b. 1825, South Carolina; d. 1863, Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi. married MALINDA E.

(3) J M BOON, b. 1826, South Carolina. married MARY M.

(4) ELISHA BOON, was born 1831 in Pickens District, South Carolina, and died in Alabama. He married AMELIA M. A. POYAS June 24, 1855 in Pickens County, Alabama, daughter of FRANCIS POYAS and MARTHA STENT. She was born 1832 in South Carolina, and died in Alabama.

(5) ANNIE BOON, was born April 20, 1833 in Pickens District, South Carolina, and died February 11, 1897 in Pickens County, Alabama. She married LAWRENCE DECODY "LD" BAILEY February 04, 1858 in Olney, Pickens County, Alabama, son of KENNEDY BAILEY and MARY PERRY. He was born February 22, 1835 in Pickens County, Alabama, and died September 08, 1912 in North Port, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.

(6) CATHERINE BOON, b. April 20, 1833, Pickens District, South Carolina; d. Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama; m. ANDREW JOHN SLAUGHTER, February 04, 1858, Olney, Pickens County, Alabama; b. June 1831, North Carolina; d. October 1904, Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.

(7) THOMAS A. BOON, b. 1836, Alabama; d. Mississippi

(8) ROBERT NEWTON BOON, was born 1838 in Alabama, and died February 12, 1917 in Bowie, Montague County, Texas. He married REBECCA INGRAM Bef. 1866, daughter of ARMISTEAD INGRAM and NANCY MCRAE. She was born 1842 in Mittonsville, Anson County, North Carolina, and died 1882 in Okolona, Chickasaw County, Mississippi.

(9) BELTON J. BOON, was born June 1842 in Alabama, and died 1922 in Okolona, Chickasaw County, Mississippi. He married ANNE ELIZABETH MCINTOSH December 06, 1866 in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, daughter of MURDOCK MCINTOSH. She was born October 1842 in Mississippi, and died 1929 in Okolona, Chickasaw County, Mississippi.
