J.P. Lamance Dies Suddenly.
Special to The Republic. Neosho, MO, July 22.
J. P. Lamance of Pineville, McDonald County, dropped dead from heart failure this morning. He had been a resident of this county over 50 years, holding county offices a number of times, and was also Postmaster of Pineville a number of years. He was well known in St. Louis mercantile circles.)
Born in Morgan County, TN to Jacob and Louisa Winters Laymance the family had moved to Spring Place, Murray County, Georgia by 1840 and there he married Cynthia Caldwell on 10 Mar 1842. They moved to Southwest Missouri not long afterwards and the first of their children are born there. They followed the allure of gold in California around 1849 and were enumerated on the 1850 census in Sutter, CA with daughter Marthena, sons Marcus and John. Son George was born in 1853 before making the trip home to Missouri. It is believed there were eight children, a daughter died on the way to California and Marthena and John on the way back.
Although many family trees have his middle name as Preston there is no proof that it was other than a mention by his daughter-in-law Lora Sarah Nichols Lamance after his death. If one studies the 1876 Missouri State Census it is clearly not Preston and looks very much like Pennington. I called the McDonald city recorder who pulled out the original record and was in agreement with my assessment.
