Born in McMinn County Tennessee to Adam W. Caldwell and his wife, who was said to be Jane Givens. In 1840 the family was living in Murray County Georgia where she married James P. Lamance. His name is also spelled as Laymance. Shortly after they married they moved to Missouri along with her parents and sister Barthenia G. Caldwell McGhee, wife of Burton McGhee. They went with young children to California during the gold rush, as did her brother, Leander G. Caldwell and his family, her father and two children died before returning to McDonald County.
