Obituary for Rose Franz Siemens

Rose was born on a farm near Inman, Kansas on June 14, 1923, the seventh child of Isaac and Helena Friesen. Early years were spent growing up on the farm where she learned to feed the hogs, milk the cows, and raise chickens. Tragedy struck early when her father suffered a long illness and died when she was 4 years old. She attended local schools but stayed home her senior year of high school to help on the farm. Returning the next year, she graduated from Inman High School in 1942.

Rose… worked at Franz Grocery Store in Buhler after completing high school. On a vacation trip to California she met Elbert Franz, a fellow Kansan, in Shafter. After a short courtship they were married in April 1945 at Buhler, Kansas. They returned to the Shafter – Wasco area where four children were born. Many happy years were spent together living in “Maple Village” a housing compound owned by Maple Leaf Enterprises. They purchased a home in Shafter in 1962 after Elbert started a new business. She was a wife and homemaker until the death of Elbert in September 1963.

A widow with four children at home between the ages of 5 and 16, Rose went to work at Richland School Cafeteria. Soon after, she began selling Avon as a second job. She enjoyed sales and later became a distributor of Shaklee Products.

Rose married a second time in December 1972 to William “Bill” Siemens in Shafter. She moved to the farm west of town and was quite busy as wife, mother, and grandmother. They also enjoyed travel making trips abroad as well as across the U.S. After 10 years together, Bill died in October 1982 leaving Rose a widow for a second time. In November 1983, she purchased a home in Shafter on Rose Avenue.

Her activities with church, family, and sales business kept her busy. She especially enjoyed cooking and entertaining family on holidays. Rose moved to Glenwood Gardens in January 2008 where she enjoyed socializing with other residents. When the time came for more personal care, she moved to Brighton Manor, a board and care home in August 2014.

Rose accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior in February 1938 and was baptized in the Zoar Krimmer Mennonite Brethren Church of Inman in July 1938. Elbert and Rose joined the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church in 1945. They worshipped and served there for many years making many life-long friendships. She practiced what was preached and passed that faith on to her children at home.

Rose went home to heaven at the age of 94 on October 23rd. Preceding her in death were husbands Elbert Franz and Bill Siemens; three brothers and three sisters; son in law Roger Uhl; and granddaughter Katie Friesen. She is survived by children Sally Uhl, Mark (Susanne) Franz, Randy (Cathy) Franz, and Marilyn (Brian) Friesen; children by marriage William Siemens and Wayne (Sharol) Siemens; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren.

A celebration of Rose’s life will be held on November 11th at 11:00 a.m. at the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church, 400 Kern Street, Shafter. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Rose’s honor can be sent to Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church “Library Fund”.
