Mrs. Walter Franklin Blackston

Winona was stricken with sorrow on Friday morning because of the loss of one of her most charming and beloved matrons in the death of Mrs. W. F. Blackston at her home on the preceding night, Jan. 11, 1940. Funeral services were conducted at the residence on Friday afternoon by her pastor, the Rev. R. G. Lord of the Methodist church, assisted by the Rev. R. S. Lowe of the Presbyterian church, with interment in Oakwood cemetery, Winona, following the services.

Born in Lodi, near Winona, Feb. 19th, 1873, Minnie Hill Blackston was the daughter of Dr. Samuel Hill, a prominent physician and pioneer citizen of Montgomery County, and his wife, Elizabeth Witty Hill. Coming to Winona in childhood, she was educated here and in the M. C. F. I., a college located in Jackson, Tennessee and noted for its cultural development of the daughters of the Southern aristocracy of this section. She broadened this training through-out her life by extensive travel, frequent attendance upon musical and dramatic productions in nearby cities and reading.

On Aug. 20, 1895, she was married to Mr. Walter Franklin Blackston, prominent in the mercantile, banking and cotton businesses and outstanding in civic leadership. They made their home in Winona continuously. Having no children of her own, Mrs. Blackston devoted her time, attention and means to her nieces and nephews and those of her husband.

She is survived by her husband, three sisters, Mrs. Annie Lou Robertson, of Jackson, Tenn.; Mrs. M. H. Talbert, of Winona, and Miss Tillie Hill of Jackson, Miss.

Mrs. Blackston's interests were manifold. A skilled housekeeper, she was noted for the beauty and charm of her home and her gracious hospitality. Her love of beauty was further expressed in the care of her lovely garden, whose superb flowers almost daily carried messages of sympathy, love, or congratulations to someone. Appreciative of all courtesies shown her, she was lavish in her devotion to her family and friends, ever thoughtful of the sick and suffering, quietly generous to those in need, liberal to her church and its organizations, sincere in all relations.

A fervid reader of the Scriptures, she especially loved those passages promising strength and giving encouragement; she applied the teachings of her Lord and Master to her own life to His glorification. Truly a beautiful life is ended, a lovely spirit is gone, but Heaven is the richer thereby.

Out-of-town relatives and friends attending the funeral were:
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Wilkins and daughter, Claudia, of Jackson; Mrs. Lucille Lowry, sons Walter and Mark, of Marks; Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Holmes, of West; Mr. and Mrs. Hartwell Blackston, of Greenwood; Mr. and Mrs. David Blackston, of Canton; Mr. and Mrs. Dick Blackston, and Mrs. Henry Blackston, of Water Valley; Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Ely and Miss Mary Hartwell Ely, of Shaw; Mrs. O. W. Watkins, of Memphis; Mrs. Anne Lou Robinson, of Memphis; Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Turner, Mrs. Joshua Grew, of Greenwood; Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Whitehead, of Jackson, and Dr. George BaskervilIe of Greenwood.
