Born Alvah Jay Sperry Humphreys, the third of their four children, "Jay" Humphreys was the son of the noted Dr. Frederic Humphreys, founder of Humphreys Homeopathic Medicines, and his second wife, the former Frances Maria Sperry. He was 32 years old at the time of his death, leaving his wife, the former Fannie Brush, and their only child, an infant son. Predeceased by his elder sister, Helen, and a half-brother, George, he was survived by his parents and brothers Frederick and Frank. Mr. Humphreys' infant son, Frederic Erastus Humphreys (1883-1941), later graduated from West Point, went on to become the first military pilot in U.S. history, and rose to the rank of general in the USAF.
