Mrs. Humphreys, nee Frances Maria Sperry, was the second wife of the noted Dr. Frederic E. Humphreys (1816-1900), founder of Humphreys' Homeopathic Medicines. Her parents were Alvah Jefferson Sperry and the former Maria Polly Tuttle of Ludlowville, in Tompkins County, New York. She was 18 when on August 1, 1843, she wed Dr. Humphreys, a young widower of 27 with a 3-year-old son. Their union proved to be a happy one, and produced four children: Helen Frances, Frederic Hahnemann, Alvah Jay Sperry, and Frank Landon Humphreys. During the course of their marriage the couple had lived in Auburn, Utica, and New York City, in addition to a summer home in Monmouth Beach, New Jersey. Predeceased by her stepson, George Humphreys, in 1868, and her husband, who died at age 84 in 1900, Mrs. Humphreys was buried at his side after her own death two years later at age 76. Among the most prominent of their descendants are grandson General Frederick E. Humphreys, the first military pilot in U.S. history, who was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, after his death in 1941; and great-granddaughter Suzanne Humphreys Ford DeFlorez, former head of the Humphreys company, who was interred here in Fort Hill after her death in 2001.
