Arthur L Fowler,a retired Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp. employe,died at 1:15 a.m. today in St. Joseph Hospital where he had been a patient for 30 hours Mr Fowler who resided at 1258 Carl St., was 74. He had been in Alton for 38 years and prior to that had lived in Bethalto for three years.
A Native of Calhoun County, he was born May 6, 1888, at Hardin a son of the late Mr & Mrs Arthur D. & Flora D. Fowler. He was married Sept 21, 1916 at Lincoln to the former Edith Plummer.
Mr Fowler had been employed at Olin Mathieson and its predecessor Western Cartridge at two different times. He had worked there during World War I in the inspection department after being away from the company for a number of years he returned in 1941 and was employed there until he retired in 1953.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs Una Mortland, and Miss Edith Irene Fowler and Mrs Nellie June Freshour, Rosewood Heights; a son Arthur H. Alton, a brother E Lee Fowler, Springfield; five sisters Mrs Maureen Rockwood, Springfield, Mrs Valera Berry, Altoona, Ill., Mrs Esther Mansell, Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs Harriett Skeel, San Francisco, California and Mrs. Opal Uzzell,Roseland Heights. 10 Grandchildren,a daughter Thelma was killed in 1943 in an auto accident and another daughter Helen, died in infancy. He also was preceded in death by three Brothers.
While in Hardin, Mr. Fowler had affiliated with the Presbyterian Church and funeral rites Monday at 1pm in Gent Chapel will be conducted by the Rev. Paul S Krebs, pastor of Twelfth Street Presbyterian Church. Alton. Burial will be in the Upper Alton Cemetery. Visitation hours at the chapel will be from 7pm Saturday until time of funeral.
