James was born in Texas to Herbert A. and Almeda Hood Mededith. His parents are also buried in Garden of Memories Cemetery. He shares a stone with his wife, Lottie Elizabeth Jones Meredith.

Pvt. Meredith, 17th Co., 20th Engineers, survived the torpedoing & sinking of the troopship "Tuscania" on 5 February 1918 in the North Channel between Scotland & Ireland by German submarine UB-77.
