Lucy had met William in London. Lucy was working as a seamstress at the rooming house that her mother managed. William's sister was living there and he had come to visit her and met Lucy. He was fascinated with Lucy's sewing. After William had gone to Kansas City, Missouri and was working and built a home, he sent for Lucy. They were married on August 17, 1883 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. They later moved to a farm a couple miles east of Humboldt, Kansas. After William died, Lucy was living with her daughter Agnes Russell and family according to the 1940 census records. Agnes died in 1943 and then Lucy went to Arizona to live with her son George and family. Lucy died in Scottsdale, Arizona at the age of 91. She and William are buried in Humboldt, Kansas.

Lucy's parents are Benjamin Chapman and Jane (Whitmore) Chapman. Lucy and two of her brothers are the only siblings to come to the United States. George and Benjamin remained in Kansas City, Missouri.
